Illiteracy In Egypt ( bachelor project )

A Documentary Movie About Illiteracy In Egyptian Streets
This study explores an important problem facing the Egyptian society, which is adult illiteracy. A documentary movie will show reasons, effects and people’s awareness towards education. This documentary initiated to raise awareness among low-income Cairo citizens. Despite the importance of literacy awareness, it is neglected in Cairo. This documentary can be shown on television as a sort of awareness and entertainment at the same time. A random sample of illiterate people living in EL-Sayeda Zainab and Ezbet Al-Haggana districts were interviewed using open-ended questions. An in depth qualitative interviews where adopted to let the participants tell their experiences. These interviews are used in this documentary movie.

The Aim

The main goal of my approach is to design a documentary video that encourages illiterate people to join adult classes. Throughout the moving images and the mixture of dialogue, music and effects, the meaning, mood and message of communication are deeply and vastly delivered to poor people, hoping that their lives will be shaped based on these moving images. With the abundance of television and films, people, the moving image is perhaps the single important form of communication among those who allow people to know about the world and about other people, and who allow people to take part and share in different cultures (Penelope 281).
This documentary video aims at showing the difficulties adult illiterates face and reasons for illiterate people to attend adult’s education classes and knowing the reasons why some people escaping from education and not attending these classes. In addition, this documentary assures the importance of helping them to understand the benefits and glories education adds to their lives. Education can help them to grow up healthy well-educated generations, and to let their children go to school and have their rights to be educated and to know about technology and what is going around them. Illiterate people must be convinced that education can be the reason of flourishing their minds and thoughts as well as lifting up to the level of prosperous social. They should know that education protects them from many problems they can face as a result of being illiterate, being
unable to read what is written in a piece of paper, or signing up an important document that may change their lives. My target group is adult illiterate people, and my aim is to brighten their minds concerning education , as well as convincing them with the fact that education is not a waste of time. Through this video, I am trying to step forward towards making a difference in their lives. I am trying to convince them to overcome their illiteracy but that would not happen unless they are convinced of the importance of education and how it makes a difference in their life and when they feel that difference, they will trust education and therefore trust the way I am dealing with such serious problem; illiteracy. My thesis will figure out whether illiterate adults can be affected by media to change their life path forever or is it only a dream that we want to achieve through media, and if adults only consider media as a way of entertaining not a tool of recognizing the problem of being illiterate. Although illiteracy is not the only problem that faces the Egyptian society now a days, yet more attention should be directed to its causes, effects and methods of raising peoples awareness towards it as it is believed that education is the main source of most of the problems that face countries and nations.
